Root Canal

The reason to visit with Dr. Affleck is to get a good idea of your options. First and foremost he will try to prevent the need for a root canal, if possible. If it is clear that the infection has reached the root, then he will explain the pros and cons of an extraction followed by either a bridge, flipper tooth or dental implant, and compare that with having a root canal performed.

The goal is to empower you with all your options and the related key information, including the financial comparison. From there you can make the choice that makes the most sense for you.

What is included in a root canal?

A root canal is a partial restoration. It is made up of at least three prosthetics components.

  1. The prosthetic pulp, usually a polymer called gutta-percha

  2. Prosthetic core - a "dental filling"

  3. And a prosthetic crown.

  4. A post may or may not be considered to add strength.

Benefits of root canals:

  • Saves a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. This can help you maintain your natural smile and avoid the need for dental implants or bridges.

  • Relieves pain and discomfort. Root canals can effectively treat toothaches caused by infected pulp.

  • Prevents further damage to the tooth. If left untreated, infected pulp can spread to the surrounding bone and tissue, leading to more serious problems.

Risks of root canals:

  • Infection. There is a small risk of infection after a root canal. This is usually treatable with antibiotics.

  • Damage to the tooth or surrounding tissue. In rare cases, the procedure can damage the tooth or surrounding tissue. This may require additional treatment.

  • Pain or discomfort during the procedure. Some people experience pain or discomfort during the root canal procedure. However, most people find that the pain is manageable with local anesthesia.
